Blue Biotechnology
Biotechnology
is a core technology of the future. First active compounds and
techniques derived from the sea has been applied for human welfare
during the last years. This Blue Biotechnology comprises
extraordinary value adding potential, because of physicochemical and
biological facts, e.g. the high diversity of chemical compounds and
organisms in the sea. Recent market developments foster the
perspective of the Blue Biotechnology being one of the driving forces
of future economy and revealing its outstanding role for the human
well-being. In order to tap its full potential a strategy for the
cooperation between scientific institutions and enterprises should be
formulated, considering the strengths and specific socio-economic
characteristics. Schleswig-Holstein in particular is suitable as a
site for the establishment and promotion of a Blue Biotechnology
based industry, because of its geographic location and its leadership
in marine science. Furthermore, interfaces to other premium sciences
and economic branches in Schleswig-Holstein (medicine: dermatology,
oncology; tourism; food industry; environmental technology) will
generate synergistic effects by developing new products and
techniques. An important prerequisite, however, for a fruitful
development of Blue Biotechnology is a fluent cooperation between
science and economy.
